Gardener/Horticulturist

EcoGardens LLC is a woman-owned company based in Philadelphia. We take care of residential gardens in Northwest Philly (Germantown, Mt. Airy, Chestnut Hill) but we are not limited to that area and have clients all over the Greater Philadelphia region. We follow the 2/3 native rule, meaning, 2/3 of the plants in our gardens must be North American native plants. The other 1/3 of plants are not invasive but could be plants such as roses, annual vines, and vegetables/fruits. We are a small crew of 4-5 people with camaraderie.

Position details:

  • $17.50-21/hour, based on experience

  • Part-time (10-15 hrs/week) in spring with possibility to become up to 30 hours/wk in summer.

  • Position runs from late March through November but you can make your own term-limit

  • Your own transportation is highly encouraged but not necessary (we can all carpool in the work trucks)

  • Hours are flexible but generally M-F 8:30am-3:00pm, w/ paid lunch break

Requirements:

  • Experience preferred but not necessary

  • Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds

  • Able to bend, sit, and kneel for extended periods of time

  • Willingness to learn and open-mindedness

  • Enjoy being outdoors in all weather conditions (we usually don’t work in rain)

Job Tasks:

  • Weeding, pruning, dead-heading, watering, etc.

  • Removal of invasive species (Owner will teach Plant Identification)

  • Spreading organic mulch and compost (no black mulch or chemical-based soils)

  • Planting annuals, perennials, small shrubs/trees, vegetables, herbs and bulbs

  • Cleaning up the job site; sweeping, raking, and bagging up debris.

The ideal candidate should be willing to learn about native ecosystems and habitat restoration. An interest in soil health, plant-pollinator interactions, and healthy wildlife habitats would be a great quality for this job.
